The Last Princess is a movie adaptation of a novel by Kwon Bi Young. The movie is inspired by the life story of Princess Yi Deok Hye who is the last daughter of the Korean Empire. Princess Deok Hye received a lot of affection from her father King Gojong. Later, Princess Doek Hye became acquainted with the son of General Kim named Kim Jang Han. Jang Han and Princess Deok Hye were married by the king to become fugitives to China. Shortly after Jang Han and Princess Deok Hye’s wedding date, King Gojong was poisoned by one of his servants and since then the government in Korea has been in chaos. It was then that Princess Deok Hye’s life turned into suffering. When Princess Deok Hye became a teenager and the Korean Empire was controlled by Japan, Princess Deok Hye was forced to leave the palace and her family to go to Japan under the pretext of education.

Even though Princess Deok Hye did not actually go to school in Japan, Princess Deok Hye was used as a prisoner so that the Korean Empire would not rebel. Princess Deok Hye actually objected and was forced by the orders of the Pro-Japanese Counselor Han. While Princess Deok Hye was in Japan, she felt and realized that she was being held captive by the Japanese Empire. One day Jang Han and Princess Deok Hye met again at Emperor Yeong’s residence, that’s when Deok Hye realized that the Korean Empire had collapsed and was under Japanese control. With the reunion between Jang Han and Princess Deok Hye became the beginning of Deok Hye’s rebellion to return home to Korea. Yi Wu, the niece of Princess Deok Hye, along with Jang Han, tried to repatriate her aunt (Princess Deok Hye). However, the efforts made by Princess Deok Hye, Yi Wu, and Jang Han were discovered by Counselor Han.

After the plan to repatriate Princess Deok Hye failed, Princess Deok Hye was forced to marry the son of the Japanese Empire, Prince Takeyuki. After marrying Prince Takeyuki, Princess Deok Hye felt lonely and empty. Princess Deok Hye felt there was no hope to return to Korea and be back with her family. Slowly Princess Deok Hye was not recognized by her own people because she was married to Prince Takeyuki. After Japan lost to the Allies, Princess Deok Hye was still unable to return to Korea so she became depressed and tried to commit suicide. 38 years after moving to Japan, Princess Deok Hye was finally able to return to Korea and be recognized again by her people.

With the movie The Last Princess, we get a picture of how miserable the Korean people were during the Japanese colonization. How much they survived to maintain their identity at critical times. The Last Princess movie presents a heartbreaking story and makes the hearts of many people moved. It has an epic storyline and good picture presentation, the acting of Son Ye-Jin (Yi Deok Hye), Hae Il Park (Kim Jang Han) is very good but does not make this movie 100% perfect. Some scenes in the movie feel slow and can affect the rhythm of the movie. The number of emotional moments is what makes some scenes too long and makes the storyline feel long. But overall The Last Princess movie is very good and must be watched and helps us to understand a little about the history that happened in Korea in the past.
